Every year, the actors at my film acting school, Love Acting in Baton Rouge, prepare film script scenes to present to casting directors, agents, filmmakers, and family & friends. There are two performances- one in New Orleans and one in Baton Rouge. I started the Showcase four years ago with hopes to model what I had done when I was a young actor in Los Angeles looking to connect with agents and casting directors. I went to a school called Black Nexxus (led by Susan Batson— Nicole Kidman, Jamie Foxx, and Halle Berry’s private coach) where they had a yearly showcase for the students.
The outcome of Showcase is always unique. I find that for the actors— even though they may have signed up to do Showcase with the intention of networking— the most powerful part is watching their confidence grow and the connection that they create with their fellow actors. Many of the actors who come to Love Acting are interested in film and might not have ever ventured onto a stage before. But this experience gives them an ability to take their love of film acting and explore it in front of other people (and audiences), which breeds creativity, confidence, and self-awareness. The self-awareness really helps them see their blind spots and know what they need to work on. It does bring out the best in each actor as they free-fall and learn to be gentle with themselves and their fellow actors.
After Showcase is over, there’s always this elated sense of joy that actors feel about their accomplishment. There’s so much power in taking risk. And I always feel so proud of each actor. Showcase 2025, we took a leap and rented out Manship theater for the actors to present to friends and family and casting directors/agents in the Baton Rouge area. It was a very professional, delightful experience. Showcase 2025 proved to be a great success, and we’re thankful for all the people who came to check out the Baton Rouge pool of film actors at Love Acting.
